Soma Sarkar was born in West Bengal, India. She grew up in a family of educators and scientists. Her family has always loved and practiced various forms of Arts including Hindustani Sangeet. At the tender age of five, her mother recognized her singing talent and decided that she should start her formal lessons in Hindustani Classical singing. A few years down the road, her family settled in Serampore, West Bengal. Fortunately for Soma and her family, this town happens to be a "town of musicians". For over a century, Serampore and it's surroundings have served as a performing center for the popular Classical musicians of India. Soma didn't waste any time and started taking her lessons from her Guru, Shri Dilip Baran Sarkar. Shri Sarkar, a dischiple of Ustad Sharafat Hussain Khan, trained Soma in the style of Agra Gharana. Soma's training mainly consists of singing "Khayal", "Thumri", "Bhajan", and "Nazrul Geeti" to mention a few. In Serampore, Soma had the opportunity to meet many great Indian musicians and appear in various performances along side many highly qualified Hindustani Classical Musicians.
